1, 2, 3…and 4! Race the Ridge report

Garneau Evolution takes 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Garneau Evolution had another great weekend. Coming off our win from the Washington State Championships the previous weekend, the Team had a lot confidence going into this weekend’s 3-stage race in Maple Ridge. The race consisted of a Time Trial in the picturesque park, Golden Ears, a technical (and very wet) Criterium, and a very hilly Road Race.

After the 22km Time Trial on Saturaday morning, we were sitting in 2nd (Dave Stephens), 4th (Curtis Deardon) and 7th (Jason Thompson).  This was going to give us good options going into the Road Race Sunday morning, as long as the Crit stayed together.

Much like the Time Trial, the weather was not very good, and in fact, worse.  A lot of rain, and some wind, made a technical course tricky. Most seemed content to generally keep the pack together and save efforts for primes and the finale. The Team managed to pull off a 3rd (Jeff Werner) and 4th (Alistair Howard), and Stephens was able to pick up a 3s time bonus during the race bringing him to only 2 seconds behind the GC leader.

Sunday morning the Team was ready to do battle for the top spot in the GC. We were by far the strongest team on the start line. The hilly course was only 100km long, but had plenty of climbing. A small break was established early, with Thompson in it, and by the end it had ballooned to include Stephens, Thompson, Deardon and Howard. Although the Team wasn’t able to capitalize with our number to take the win for the stage, we were able to take the top spot on GC, and the next 3 placings as well!
